Quick Answer
With 7 days in China, do Beijing and Shanghai. Do not try to add Xi'an unless you are comfortable with a rushed trip and one fewer full day in each city.
This route gives you:
- Beijing for imperial history, hutongs, and the Great Wall.
- High-speed rail as the city-to-city experience.
- Shanghai for modern China, neighborhoods, and an easier departure.
Best For
This route fits:
- First-time travelers with only one week.
- People who want contrast rather than depth.
- Travelers flying into Beijing and out of Shanghai, or the reverse.
- Visitors who want a low-risk route with strong transport and hotel options.
It is not ideal for travelers who want slow travel, hiking, village stays, or multiple Hidden China destinations.
Day-by-Day Route
Day 1 — Arrive in Beijing
Keep this day light. Check in, set up mobile data, test Alipay, and walk near your hotel. If you have energy, visit Wangfujing, Qianmen, or a hutong area close to where you are staying.
Do not book a major timed attraction on arrival day.
Day 2 — Tiananmen Area + Forbidden City + Jingshan
Make this your main imperial Beijing day. Book the Forbidden City in advance and bring the same passport used for the reservation.
After the Forbidden City, walk to Jingshan Park for the classic view over the palace roofs. If you are tired, stop there. If you still have energy, add Beihai Park or a hutong dinner.
Day 3 — Great Wall Day Trip
Choose Mutianyu for the easiest first-time Great Wall day. It has solid infrastructure, cable car options, and enough dramatic views without the logistical stress of more remote sections.
Book transport through your hotel, a trusted platform, or a reliable private driver. Public buses are possible, but they are not the best use of time on a 7-day trip.
Day 4 — Temple of Heaven + Train to Shanghai
Spend the morning at Temple of Heaven, then take an afternoon high-speed train from Beijing South to Shanghai Hongqiao.
Book the train early through 12306 or a foreigner-friendly booking platform. Double-check the station: Beijing South and Shanghai Hongqiao are not the same as the cities' older central stations.
Day 5 — The Bund + Yu Garden + Old City
Start with the Bund and the riverfront. Then visit Yu Garden and the old city area. Expect crowds; go early if you want calmer photos.
In the evening, return to the Bund or cross to Lujiazui if you want skyline views from the Pudong side.
Day 6 — French Concession + Museum or Neighborhood Day
Use this day for Shanghai's slower side: tree-lined streets, cafes, small museums, and neighborhoods. Add Shanghai Museum or a contemporary art stop if it fits your interests.
This is also the best buffer day if weather or train timing disrupted the earlier plan.
Day 7 — Departure
Keep the final day simple. Leave enough time for airport transfer, especially if departing from Pudong. Save your passport, flight details, and hotel address offline.
What to Book Before You Go
- First hotel in Beijing.
- Forbidden City ticket.
- Great Wall transport.
- Beijing to Shanghai train.
- Shanghai hotel.
- eSIM or roaming.
- Alipay and WeChat setup.
Common Mistakes
Adding too many cities
Seven days is short. Two cities already include a major train transfer and arrival/departure days.
Booking the wrong train station
Use exact station names: Beijing South, Beijing West, Shanghai Hongqiao, Shanghai Railway Station. They are not interchangeable.
Waiting on Forbidden City tickets
The Forbidden City is a reservation-heavy attraction. Do not treat it as a walk-up visit.
